The folks at Flying Dog delivered for me again! I had a critical radiator failure and they fit me in for diagnosis and got my radiator changed out quickly to get me back on the road. Thanks FDG!

I don’t usually write reviews, especially negative ones, but I think it’s important for people to know what they’re getting into with this garage.
I was referred to this shop by another garage that said they specialize in foreign cars. I have a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL that needed some work, specifically on the transmission, which the other shop couldn’t handle. Unfortunately, my experience here was very frustrating.
1. Poor Communication
From the start, the staff didn’t seem interested in listening to me. I tried explaining what was going on with my car, but the person I dealt with kept interrupting me and dismissing what I was saying. As someone who’s been driving this car for years, I know its history and issues better than anyone, but she wouldn’t hear me out. This was really annoying and unprofessional.
2. Unnecessary Diagnostics and Long Waits
I had just done a diagnostic test at the previous garage three days earlier and already knew what needed to be done. Still, they insisted on running their own diagnostic before doing anything. I agreed, hoping it would speed things up, but instead, I ended up waiting four hours—way longer than it should take for any competent shop. When they finally gave me the results, it was the same information I had already told them. To top it off, none of the actual work I requested was done, and I was charged $239 for wasting half my day.
3. Misunderstanding Service Codes
They don’t seem to understand how to properly interpret service codes. For them, an error code automatically means replacing a part, instead of figuring out the root cause. For example, my car had low transmission fluid, which is clearly stated in the Mercedes-Benz manual as a common cause of the error I was seeing. Instead of addressing that simple fix, they jumped straight to recommending expensive part replacements. This felt either like a lack of knowledge or an attempt to upsell unnecessary work.
4. Overpriced Estimates
Their estimates were ridiculously high. For example, they quoted nearly $2,000 to replace spark plugs—a routine service that shouldn’t cost anywhere near that much. For a car with 185,000 miles, I’m not trying to get it to perfect condition, so such pricing was completely unreasonable.
5. All-or-Nothing Service Policy
They also have this strange policy where you have to agree to everything they recommend before they’ll do anything. Even though I only needed specific work done, they wanted me to redo recent maintenance I’d already had done at another shop, like oil changes and filter replacements. This didn’t make any sense to me and seemed like another way to pad the bill.

As usual the crew at Flying Dog Garage provided excellent service and an equally excellent result. They even provided me a loaner car when I needed to get to work during an extra repair round. Elizabeth in the front office is always cheerful and she has quite a knack for maintaining healthy beautiful plants to adorn the office space there. Justin the mechanic gave me some expert tips for future purchases of BMWs as well.

Work done was from when I asked them to do an extensive check last month. It was done professionally and on time. This is my family’s third experience and we are pleased. The women working to get everything set up are very knowledgeable and friendly.
These are our people for car maintenance now.

I have been using Flying Dog Garage for over 15 years. I have never had anything but great service. Everybody is very professional and friendly. Work and repairs are always done correctly. This is the only shop I will take my cars to. I’ve been to most of the repair shops in Kalamazoo and this is the one I trust the most.
