Great shop. I've been to dozens of shops in the past and I can say it's rare to find a mechanic that is legitimately trying to help you fix a problem, not just trying to get a sale. Robert was the mechanic who worked on my truck and all I can say is I'm very happy with my experience. He was patient, diagnosed the problem quickly, and didn't charge me for some simple fixes he could have charged me for. Not to mention their rates are good. If you're considering Gates I highly recommend going to see Robert.

As far as local mechanics go, the boys at Gates are hard to top. I've been taking all of my cars for routine service and repairs - big and small - to Gates Automotive for several years now. They've taken care of every vehicle that's been in my garage from the family cruiser to my old Honda. They are straightforward, offer a timely/quick turnaround on the work, incredibly professional and have done a tremendous job on all needed repairs. And, not to bury the lede, their prices are always fair. Everyone should have a "go to" mechanic in their life...and delighted that I have Gates!

I had an issue with my Town & Country that the dealer took over 48 hours to diagnose, wanted $1,500 to fix, and didn't even cover all the codes the engine was throwing. I had enough of the dealership, looked for the highest rated local mechanic, and called Gates. They properly diagnosed the problems in only 4 hours and fixed the 2 most important ones by the next afternoon, all for less than the dealer wanted. They're well regarded for a reason! Thank you Gates Automotive!

Went in there on a recommendation just to see if they could test my battery and the front desk guy says "it's gonna be Monday does this look like autozone to you?" When he could have just easily explained that they do not provide that service openly.

I have been going to Gates Automotive for several years. I no longer trusted my dealership. I have received excellent service, knowledgeable mechanics and in my opinion the best mechanics in town. I trust this family own business without reservation or hesitation. They service all our vehicles and my kids cars too. Gates Automotive charged me $1500 for the work they did on my car earlier this year. They were supposed to have fixed my breaks but instead they left air in my break hoses, left 3 broken calibers, and the master cylinder they “replaced” was broken beyond repair or worth. I completely lost my break power. Obviously, not trusting them, I had to go somewhere else. I found out just how much damage they had done rather than fix the car after having to rent a $600 vehicle for 3 days from Enterprise. I strongly recommend no longer going to them for any vehicular repairs for anyone. Thankfully today I have my car repaired and my breaks are now working. Take it or leave it. But it happened. I have receipts to prove it all. Do not go to Gates Automotive. They are untrustworthy, and left my vehicle in complete disrepair.

Moved back to Louisville in April. I pass Gates all the time, and when I needed to have some work done on my Honda CRV, I checked out their Google reviews. Which are impressive (I saw a five-star one from my optometrist so felt good about going there). Chris worked on my car, fixing a leaking AC condensate line and discovering the cause of a weird noise (broken clips on a wheel cover). Very happy to have discovered a locally owned company I can trust to do quality work at a fair price.

DO NOT BRING YOUR VEHICLE HERE!!!!! THE MECHANICS AT THIS SHOP PUT A 30 AMP FUSE INTO A 7.5 AMP PORT AND FRIED MY ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN MY CAR. THIS CAUSED OVER $12,000 IN DAMAGES WHICH THE OWNER OF GATES THEN DENIED HIS WORKERS DOING AND LEFT ME TO DEAL WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY. DO NOT BRING YOUR VEHICLE TO THIS SHOP.

Literal scam. Charged me $96 to tell me my air compressor needed replacement which i already knew and i had already told them on the phone before i brought it to them. i've taken my car to them FOUR times and only left with repair one time. the first time i took my car they told me nothing was wrong and then it broke down on me a few days later. then they charged me hundreds of dollars to fix the actual problem that they missed the first time leading to me paying for a tow truck because the car wouldn't run. took my car again and they told me the heating coils weren't good but i didn't need to replace it because it "wasn't going to do anything to the car". then my AC stopped working (randomly) telling me the compressor was out so i took it to them for repair and they wanted over $1,100 to fix it so i declined. when we went to pick up the car after they spent a whole two seconds looking at this morning they charged $96. my boyfriend went inside because i was too angry to talk to them and he said the cashier was disrespectful and mumbling under his breath when he had a complaint about the price. they are ripping people off.

I was out and about trying to get an oil change on my day off. I was so surprised that the national chains were all so backed up that I was not able to get in. The two that I was able to actually talk to someone both told me they did not carry my oil filter and to come back another day. What?? I called Gates and was told to come right in they would work me in. This is a local owner-operated garage and I couldn’t be happier I came! They were so happy to help…even had my oil filter. They are friendly and got me in and out quickly. I will say that I will come here for all of my automotive needs while in Louisville !!

I hate to write this, but I must. First, I want to say that I've lived the Highlands for 14 years and took my car to Gates with no problem for the first 8 years of living here. They were honest, loyal, and amazing, but something shifted in the last five years. I took my son's car there to get brakes done and then my truck to get a tire rotation (It had new brakes). They called and told me that my truck did need new brakes and that it would cost $400. I was livid. I told them they had the wrong car. The truck was brand new! It just needed a routine tire rotation. I went up there to complain and the guy just laughed and said, you got to admit it's kind of funny. I said no it is not. I am a teacher, and I cannot afford to pay for things that I do not need. No ha, ha, he, he. So last week I decided to give it one more chance. Something was wrong with my car overheating. I thought maybe a leak. Now, I have 30,000 miles on my truck. They called and said it needs a new radiator. No way, I know better. So I took it to Jeep Service center and wouldn't ya know its the thermostat. The price difference was half to cost of what Gates wanted to charge me. So here I am writing a bad review, and hoping that they get their act together. Stop robbing people and do honest work. People do not mind paying for honest service. I wanted to use you all, but never again. I do not trust you with my vehicles. One more thing, they are the nicest group of guys you ever want to meet. They get a 100 on friendliness. That's why I hate to write this review. They are for sure lovable guys.

The absolute best auto mechanic! Very professional, honest, efficient, thorough, reasonably priced, and knowledgeable. Resolved my son’s car issue quickly after another overpriced chain failed to do so. Gates even explained and showed us what the issue was. Glad we found Gates Automotive! I cannot say enough positive comments about this business! If you have car issues, do yourself a favor and give them a try! You will not be disappointed!

I ordered a tie rod for a Jeep liberty and was cold. It would arrive in five days. I have not received that order. I would like to get that part. It is an axle. I ordered it once before and you all screwed up now you’re screwing up for a second time usually I have no problems with you. I usually get what I ordered But for some reason for the past two times you all have screwed up my order I live at 4236 Prestwick Square, New Albany, IN 47150. Please send my part I was told five days and it is now been almost 2 weeks if not, two weeks

Gates is .::The Best::. Period. As one not completely car repair savvy, it can be intimidating seeking help in resolving car repair/maintenance issues, sadly :/ As an example, I was having an issue with my older model Impala. I had gone by Meineke for an overview assessment and repair quote. Meineke quotes me over 4k??! That's 4x more than my cars even worth. I left and looked for a 2nd opinion. After reading allll the excellent reviews on Gates I decide this is my next place to give a repair try to my beloved old girl. Well, they came through like CHAMPS, I say!!! Exactly as all the reviews of excellence state. As well as being family owned locally. They gave me an honest take on what I needed for repair, once in agreement, they had me up and running better than ever (actually better than the whole time I've driven her?) All for an ahhmazingly fair price. Between Rob (Owner) and Steve (Magical Mechanic) I have found my new car reliable, honest, & fair place! Thank you all so much!!! I greatly appreciate you!

As with several other excellent businesses in the Louisville area, I only found out about this one by word of mouth. I had never used an automotive repair service in the area, but I knew I had upcoming issues to deal with on our cars. I had called and visited repair shops, but I wasn't impressed. I asked around, and Gates Automotive was recommended by a family friend. Fast forward to today,... and this is the only automotive repair service I have used since being in Louisville for 2 years going on 3. Multiple vehicle issues have been effectively, efficiently, and professionally troubleshot and resolved, with no complaints at all on my end, except for the delay in getting into their shop - undoubtedly due to high demand from loyal customers (such as myself) who have received excellent service like I have. Selfishly, I hate to leave a review such as this one, because it means my wait times may be even longer, but perhaps you need a good mechanic too - so I hope this helps. Gates Automotive is the best I have found in Louisville!

I can't say they are the best in town - because I won't bother trying out other places. Every time I bring my car here I am given fair advice and never oversold. David and Robert keep customer service at the front of every encounter and I appreciate them calling me by name for years. It starts with high standards for all of their technicians who are thorough and efficient. They ask a fair price and rarely push me into services I had not first brought up myself. Car trouble means stress - when I give my car to Gates I trust it will be in top shape when I get it back. I drive stress-free knowing I have great people taking care of my safety!
