It’s that time to year again, “annual smog inspection” for Californians 😕 I was searching for a star verified business with great customer service and I found it at 415 SF Official at the Chevron Gas Station ⛽️ in the Castro! Bill is the operator and does ana amazing job of getting customers in and out, explaining what needs to be done (if issues arise) and providing customer service with a smile. His discounts for service, including “smog tests” are reasonably priced and a GOOD DEAL! If you need a smog check, go see Bill.

How much can a smog test actually cost well. Apparently over $200. I was told over the phone it was a flat $100 free retest. I got a bill for $175 with a fail. So I fixed the turn signal paid another $40 for a retest and this time I passed. I honestly wish the state would let the public know exactly what these owner operators are supposed to look for during a smog check. Am I there for a vehicle safety inspection? Thankfully I had new tires. The state needs to clamp down on this kind of nonsense. Tell the consumer exactly why their car is being smogged. Guys like this give the smog business a bad name. My neighbor's son that drives a 2001 hot rod that has every modification under the sun passed with flying colors. But my 2014 Santa Fe has a retest for a potential moving violation?

Shady business. They essentially just make up whatever price they feel like. I asked for a quote before coming in, somehow it was magically $10 more expensive in person due to a state fee that wasn’t mentioned on the phone. Alright, I’m already there so I go with it. Car fails. I tell them the cap-less gas intake can be finicky - let me try wiping it. Too late. But don’t worry, they’ve got a “special price” to retest. Mind you, most places I called have one free re-test. This place is a total rip-off.

I've been taking my car to this station for years. The attendants are always nice. However it is very expensive. Four years ago it was $39, two years ago it was $69, and this year they charged me $129. This for a basic uncomplicated smog check which it passed. The next time I'll go to Castro Smog across the street and get it done for half the price.

Was quoted $59 on the phone; when you get there they'll tell you the $59 is if you fail, but $69 if you pass. Annoying, but fine, not a huge deal. Then I was told if my car is a "STAR vehicle" they have to charge $20 extra. Now that's one I haven't heard of before. I entertain it. Asked the guy what that means, "it's just whether the DMV selects you as a STAR vehicle." Okay? That does not tell me why I have to pay extra. Forgive me but I'm not going to pay for something I don't understand. I got out of there before they could try to add on any other charges. Bopped over to Quality Tune Up on Fell St. for the smog test instead. Quick and easy, $68.20 (was told upfront) and less than 20 min! Do yourself a favor..don't even bother, just go somewhere else.

I have to share my experience here at 415 SF Smog Station. I need to have the smog done on my 1998 Toyota 4Runner. And I knew as a mechanic, how older vehicles can be "finicky" when it comes to smog. Some places don't even do 98's and older. Anyway, I brought vehicle over to them without any expectations. And the gentleman that took care of me, Bill, went above and beyond to get my 4Runner smogged. It took some time, but, he got it done and that's all that I wanted. So, yes, I am a very happy camper! Full disclosure here... The price for older vehicles are somewhat expensive compared to other places. But, it was all worth the time and money spent to get it done. Thanks again! You have a customer for life!

SCAM!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!! A few people wrote they were failed the test for the smallest problem. I changed my battery and they failed my test. Made me paid $128 and told me to come back saying I wouldn't have had to pay again for retest. when I came back the same guy who helped me previously was grumpy and said he didn't remember, and didn't have my previous test information. He charged me again for retest. I passed. But I never received my registration card. So today I checked my renewal status. My registration hasn't renewed. obviously they did not send my test results to DMV. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS PLACE!!!!

I was trying to sell my car and I needed a last minute smog. So at about around 3:50 pm I googled for a place that might be open 9n a Sunday eveing. And this place " 415 SF Official Star Smog Check" came up, and I had called them. The person who answer the called ( Numan ) is said that if I could get there b6 4:15 pm that be would be able to do the Smog for me. But with the time of the day with traffic, I said I could try but maybe around 4:30pm... then Numan said ok come, and that he would wait for me... so im writing this review to say... I so happy and glad that there are still shops that are around, who is willing to help the customer even if its little bit after hours... thank you Numan!!!
