I never thought I would give five star rating to the DMV. The folks here are top notch. Got me out of here in ten minutes with a smile.

In and out in 10 minutes at 10am on a Saturday. Staff could not have been more professional or helpful; really appreciated the experience and left with a positive feeling!

I recently purchased a new car (2025) in MD but reside in DC. The employees behind the desk told me I needed a OBD, an on-board diagnostic form from the car dealership indicating that nothing is wrong with the vehicle. They said because when I drove the car through the inspection station they weren’t able to get a read on the vehicle. The service department and finance department at the dealership said they never heard of this request before, however they made efforts to assist me. The first two forms they provided were the full inspection and carfax, which was not acceptable by the DC inspection employee. I spent my entire day running circles with two of this DC inspection station employment staff, who demonstrate very deceptive practices. Please be informed all this was unnecessary, as a new vehicle does not need to be physically inspected. You only need to surrender your old tags (if not using them for the new vehicle) at the DC DMV Center and receive a receipt indicating you did so and get your temporary parking permit for the new vehicle. One of the staff behind the desk at the inspection station told me that DC DMV is no longer taking old vehicle tags, you have to surrender online and discard them yourself. Please be very careful when you go here.

Thank you to D’Angelo for checking our car seat installation! He said we had done a good job of it already, but showed us how we could tighten the strap for an even more secure fit. We’re very glad we came in and had someone so kind and competent check our seat!

Super easy process and everyone was really friendly. I’ve come twice close to opening (once on a Friday, once on a Saturday) and never had to wait in line.

The guy at the entrance/stop sign was amazing. Pulled up on a Friday morning and was in and out. They moved me from a bay where I was 4 cars back. Then I was moved into an open bay that had me move right though. Customer service was great.

I never thought I'd be writing a positive review for anything DMV related, but honestly the team at the Half Street inspection station were simply delightful. They went above and beyond to get my car in-and-out as quick as possible and apologized when I even had to wait a few minutes. Getting my car inspected here was the only good part of the DC vehicle registration process!

Fairly negative experience today at the SW DMV Inspection Station. Since it was New Year's Eve and pretty empty, the total lack of signage outside the station naturally resulted in my entering the station the wrong way. This caught a reprimand by a very rude and unfriendly DMV employee who told me to turn around and whose unclear instructions to re-enter the station beckoned clarification. The response to my request for clarification was condescending and unfriendly. I proceeded to turn around and after guessing the entrance was greeted by another employee who guided me to Lane 1. After entering Lane 1, the same employee from the first incorrect approach chided me for "blowing past the stop sign" and asked me to back up in Lane 1. When I exited my car after another younger inspection agent began the inspection, I saw that the mobile stop sign in Lane 1 was pushed back against the wall and that the red stop sign was actually facing the wall (not the entering cars). What a negative experience, and what pathetic customer service. I regret not having asked for the first employee's name because of course I am going to send a lengthy complaint to the DMV, but I wished to minimize my interactions with him.

Well. run and very efficient with friendly and helpful staff (Torrey Robinson). My recommendation is arrive first thing in the morning. Essentially you drive in where they plug a cable into your OBD-II port under your dashboard for the emissions test. You then pull forward and they put a sticker on your windshield that is good for two years. Could not have been easier. Also, although not checked by the DMV it’s a good idea to make sure your vehicle doesn’t have any defects such as brake lights or headlights out. And check your tire treads and wiper blades too.

I came here a couple weeks ago (10/25 around 10am) for my inspection, and honestly, I had a pretty similar experience to the reviewer named Jason from 3 months ago: the greeter was not there when I arrived, and when he showed up he was unfriendly, wouldn’t speak to me through my driver’s side window but instead chose to argue with me through my passenger window, and acted like I was the one getting aggressive when I was just trying to clarify that I was confused about the unclear signage and confused about his direction. After I got out of my car, I was told to walk around the outside of the building (south side) and wait up front, and I heard someone near my car refer to me as “little young thing over there.” Very unprofessional. I did not pass my inspection due to window tint, and I was told my front tint was fine but my back tint was at a 16 and it needed to be at a 15. He said he could give me a razor blade and I would have to scrape it off to pass. My window was dirty, so I thought maybe it was just a petty thing due to continued unprofessionalism. I also suspect he heard me make a disparaging remark in my frustration with what had already happened, which I am not proud of, but I’m only human. I left feeling completely humiliated and dehumanized. I was dreading returning, but of course I had to in order to pass inspection. HOWEVER, I went back yesterday 11/5 around 3pm and my experience was COMPLETELY different. I did not get the name of the greeter, but he certainly did his job. After that, I was met with a big smile from Tyrae (SHOUTOUT!!) in bay 3. His professionalism turned my opinion around immediately. He was kind, friendly, and understanding, and he had me walk to the front through the inside of the building (through a door on the north side). Another gentleman whose name I did not catch helped direct me as well, and he was very polite. Once Tyrae had finished the inspection, he let me know that because I had a salvage title, I was not allowed to have ANY tint, which I was not told previously. He asked if I wanted a razor blade to remove my tint, and I said yes. He told me to hurry since they were closing in 30 minutes, and I did, and I passed! I am so thankful to the team who was there yesterday. It’s crazy just how much a smile and good customer service goes a long way!! Thank you Tyrae and the rest of the team who was there yesterday!!

My Dad and I came to get inspection reports for our fleet, we went inside nobody was at the desk after waiting for about 5 minutes my dad walked to the rear of the building to the lot and asked The guy directing cars when will someone be back in the front desk , (we-assumed it was lunch time) the guy yelled at my dad and told him “Sir go up front and wait” totally dismissed my dad. So I went to walk on the lane and ask someone what’s going on, the guy was nice he just said “we are short staffed everybody’s on the lane” which was fine we just wanted a timeframe. I then asked the same nice guy what’s the man’s name that Yelled at my dad he said “Greg the Manager” the manager yelling at customers unacceptable!!!

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised! I went to the Inspection Station and received great service AND passed Yay! Then I headed to The DMV @ Benning Rd and was pleasantly surprised again! Mr. "K" gave great service (2nd time helping me) and Supervisor Ms. Wilkins or Wilson was very professional as well. There was no line at the Inspection Station and I was in and out in less that 15 minutes and about 15 minutes @ The DMV. (About 20 people) Going to both places and adding driving time between the two was less than an hour total! Unheard of right? TIP: Go on Saturday around the last 1 or 2 hours. Less people and moves faster. BE SAFE, use a handsfree device and buckle up! Oh and be kind. ☺️

An employee vandalized my car with a razor blade. He shredded and pulled half of my window tint without my permission. He then left the razor blade in my vehicle on the passenger seat. I went to complain to their front desk who completely dismissed me and said I didn’t know what I was talking about until they saw the damage, and proceeded to yell at the employee that was a liability issue. They told me they would have to fail me in the system. I couldn't drive home with zero visibility in both my windows so I asked for a blade and removed the tint myself across the street (rip my fingers). They have not offered any compensation, or help to remove it to drive home and have been dodging my calls and emails since.

This is probably one of the best government departments that I actually look forward to going to. The guys who work here are simply outstanding! Super professional, funny and so warm and hospitable. Just had to get my car inspected before the MLK holiday because they are going to be closed and they got me in and out in 7 minutes. They are awesome. God bless all of them.

I recently had my first vehicle inspection since relocating to Washington, D.C., and it was an incredibly positive experience. The three gentlemen I interacted with throughout the process were exceptionally polite and kind. The entire process was remarkably swift, and I truly appreciate the efficient and well-run government service. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this a pleasant experience.
