I received an oil change at Gates Toyota (South Bend, IN) on 12/5/25 for my 2013 Chevy Equinox. Driving home on 12/13/25, I received a "Low Oil Pressure - Stop Engine Immediately" warning. There were no prior indications (lights, smoke, etc) of trouble before this occurred. I stopped the vehicle immediately and walked home. The next morning, I went back out to the car and checked it for oil. The engine dipstick was bone dry. There was no oil under the car anywhere. I documented this by video. I had the vehicle taken home and called Gates Toyota to explain the situation. They had the car towed to them. After checking the car out, service consultant Jessie Arredondo told me that Gates Toyota was not at fault and that the leak was unrelated to the oil change or, as I believed, the drain plug being installed incorrectly. He started saying things like "internal explosion," but this can also be caused by a car running without oil, such as when a drain plug is not installed correctly. Where the story gets strange is that Jessie tells me that when the car arrived at Gates, as soon as it was taken off the tow truck and before he brought it inside to look at, he put 5 quarts of oil into the engine. The engine wouldn't start, so Jessie put it on a lift and began taking pics of oil all over the engine and under the car. Why would you put oil into a car engine that just had a significant issue (driving without oil causes severe damage), and then try to tell me the oil everywhere isn't the oil you just poured into the car? The same people who did the oil change claim that it was done correctly, and I'm supposed to take your word after you pull this stunt? Jessie's manager, Brad Stump, tried to reassure me that Jessie was mistaken; he didn't put oil in before putting it on the lift and taking pictures. I went to Gates and spoke with Jessie. He repeated what he told me before, but he still couldn't explain why he put oil in the car first. He just avoided answering this question multiple times .

Lack of honesty in regards to what was discussed about a 2015 Ford Fusion on their lot. I called and expressed interest in the car and after speaking with the salesman, I was told that the car had been serviced and was able to be delivered to my home. This was great news to me at the time as someone currently serving Active-Duty. However they told me I needed to make a "non-refundable" deposit of $500 dollars to secure the car. The car I was told I was securing was not the car I paid a deposit for however. In the following days-- I reached out asking for more pictures of the interior-- Then I was ghosted, until I had to reach out to another sales rep in order to get a response from my original salesman. I was then given four rushed pictures of the engine bay, the front drivers, rear drivers side, and rear of the car. This car was put on the market, I was told it was ready to go, and yet there was cups on the seat, and the floor and interior was filthy. I was given no more pictures of the car due to it being on the lift. I found out that the car was now getting suspension work done, which is why there was such a long delay in getting those pictures-- Which was odd to me, since I was led by the salesman saying that the car was in good shape. I could understand a quick oil change, checking the fluids, and maybe some flushing not constituting a "Hey the car still needs to be serviced" and I would be understanding of that, however I was not told that. Additionally, I followed up asking to get a video of the engine cold starting (and being able to see the color of the exhaust smoke) after the weekend had passed, I was then ghosted again for a few days, I was then told, that I couldn't be sent that because the thermostat also was being replaced. I then called and spoke to the finance manager here about how I was mislead a vehicle, and why I felt that way, and that I could no longer trust purchasing the vehicle, he then said he would speak to my salesman in order to figure out what went wrong. My salesman then an hour and some change after the phone call I had with finance then reached out to me saying that he wanted to figure out why I was no longer interested, and that he wanted to earn my business so he wanted to figure this out for me. I am not sure if he or the finance manager didn't understand what I had said, because I reiterated over text what I have wrote here, and then 2 more times he attempted to offer to "fix" the issue or transfer my deposit to another vehicle. So if you read all this; or scrolled to the bottom for the key points Don't buy a used car here Don't as a member of the Armed Forces and buy a used vehicle here Don't waste your time at this dealership, I promise you there are better options than here, that have no issue being clear, providing pictures, videos, and have already serviced and deemed a vehicle ready for purchase before they post it for sale.
