I received an oil change at Gates Toyota (South Bend, IN) on 12/5/25 for my 2013 Chevy Equinox. Driving home on 12/13/25, I received a "Low Oil Pressure - Stop Engine Immediately" warning. There were no prior indications (lights, smoke, etc) of trouble before this occurred. I stopped the vehicle immediately and walked home. The next morning, I went back out to the car and checked it for oil. The engine dipstick was bone dry. There was no oil under the car anywhere. I documented this by video. I had the vehicle taken home and called Gates Toyota to explain the situation. They had the car towed to them. After checking the car out, service consultant Jessie Arredondo told me that Gates Toyota was not at fault and that the leak was unrelated to the oil change or, as I believed, the drain plug being installed incorrectly. He started saying things like "internal explosion," but this can also be caused by a car running without oil, such as when a drain plug is not installed correctly. Where the story gets strange is that Jessie tells me that when the car arrived at Gates, as soon as it was taken off the tow truck and before he brought it inside to look at, he put 5 quarts of oil into the engine. The engine wouldn't start, so Jessie put it on a lift and began taking pics of oil all over the engine and under the car. Why would you put oil into a car engine that just had a significant issue (driving without oil causes severe damage), and then try to tell me the oil everywhere isn't the oil you just poured into the car? The same people who did the oil change claim that it was done correctly, and I'm supposed to take your word after you pull this stunt? Jessie's manager, Brad Stump, tried to reassure me that Jessie was mistaken; he didn't put oil in before putting it on the lift and taking pictures. I went to Gates and spoke with Jessie. He repeated what he told me before, but he still couldn't explain why he put oil in the car first. He just avoided answering this question multiple times .

Lack of honesty in regards to what was discussed about a 2015 Ford Fusion on their lot. I called and expressed interest in the car and after speaking with the salesman, I was told that the car had been serviced and was able to be delivered to my home. This was great news to me at the time as someone currently serving Active-Duty. However they told me I needed to make a "non-refundable" deposit of $500 dollars to secure the car. The car I was told I was securing was not the car I paid a deposit for however. In the following days-- I reached out asking for more pictures of the interior-- Then I was ghosted, until I had to reach out to another sales rep in order to get a response from my original salesman. I was then given four rushed pictures of the engine bay, the front drivers, rear drivers side, and rear of the car. This car was put on the market, I was told it was ready to go, and yet there was cups on the seat, and the floor and interior was filthy. I was given no more pictures of the car due to it being on the lift. I found out that the car was now getting suspension work done, which is why there was such a long delay in getting those pictures-- Which was odd to me, since I was led by the salesman saying that the car was in good shape. I could understand a quick oil change, checking the fluids, and maybe some flushing not constituting a "Hey the car still needs to be serviced" and I would be understanding of that, however I was not told that. Additionally, I followed up asking to get a video of the engine cold starting (and being able to see the color of the exhaust smoke) after the weekend had passed, I was then ghosted again for a few days, I was then told, that I couldn't be sent that because the thermostat also was being replaced. I then called and spoke to the finance manager here about how I was mislead a vehicle, and why I felt that way, and that I could no longer trust purchasing the vehicle, he then said he would speak to my salesman in order to figure out what went wrong. My salesman then an hour and some change after the phone call I had with finance then reached out to me saying that he wanted to figure out why I was no longer interested, and that he wanted to earn my business so he wanted to figure this out for me. I am not sure if he or the finance manager didn't understand what I had said, because I reiterated over text what I have wrote here, and then 2 more times he attempted to offer to "fix" the issue or transfer my deposit to another vehicle. So if you read all this; or scrolled to the bottom for the key points Don't buy a used car here Don't as a member of the Armed Forces and buy a used vehicle here Don't waste your time at this dealership, I promise you there are better options than here, that have no issue being clear, providing pictures, videos, and have already serviced and deemed a vehicle ready for purchase before they post it for sale.

We took our car for service. They were friendly and the technician knew what to do. I will continue to have the car serviced here as it is a high bred system. Not everyone can work on these. It's important that everything is tuned right to make it run as it should.

Great experience with Gates Toyota especially sales manager Brien. He was very accommodating and straightforward-delivered the car to us the next day. There was a small issue that was immediately resolved. Great guy!

Travis is an excellent professional salesman. He communicates clearly with no irrelevant blabber. He answers many texts I send for additional information about my Toyota Tacoma RTX 4X4 ... he also helped recommend John at Zeibart for bed cover and undercoating.

Very pushy people and not trust worthy. I purchased a car from them and they said I needed a co signer and after signing paperwork I got home to realize that they had tricked me into not having a co signer but a co buyer. I would highly recommend watching the paperwork you sign when getting a car from them. This was my first purchase needing a "co signer" when they lied I needed a co buyer and didn't realize when I signed paperwork.

Shady business. I spoke to Ashley for a few days about a van. I called before making the trip to South Bend on my day off to make sure that the van was still available. Ashley confirmed that it was still available. Surprise! When I arrived at the dealership it was sold and Ashley wasn't available. Then they wanted to tell my about another van for twice the price. The classic bait and switch. Don't waste your time with shady sales practices here at Gates Toyota.

Gates is a great place to get a vehicle. The staff are great, managers were super helpful, and service has always been fair and responsive in all my experiences with them. Highly recommend the team at Gates and was super happy with the new Tundra and how easy it was to get through the process quickly and get in my way.

Recently bought a used car here and it could've been better. Salespeople were a bit frustrating to deal with, hard to negotiate with, and oddly stiff on some relatively small details. I was here for the car, not the dealer. Oh, also the coffee sucked. Sorry. I do love my car though.

Travis McCavitt was terrific to deal with! He listened to what we were looking for and explained all the functions and features each vehicle provided. He took the time to answer all of our questions and goodness knows we had a lot! He made us feel very comfortable and did not rush or push us. Travis provided GREAT customer service and when he said we could call him with any questions, it is true. We have purchased and leased vehicles in the past from Gates and will continue to go to both Gates and Travis for future purchases.

I traveled from out of state by recommendation of a friend who did business here. As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by Daniel at the door. He immediately asked what I wanted to take a look at and treated us with genuine courtesy, making us feel like valued customers from the start. Daniel let us test drive and inspect the vehicle with zero pressure or pushy sales tactics. He was amazing to work with, and I highly recommend going to him when you’re ready to buy a car. He will absolutely take care of you. Everyone at this dealership was excellent, friendly, and professional. I would 100% purchase from here again.

I went for an oil change & software update for a open recall on my 23 Tundra Monday Jan 12th. My automatic passenger side mirror would not fold out the next morning and I took it back to Gates Toyota that same day, Tuesday the 13th. They told me it wasn't from anything that they did, that it's a known issue with these mirrors, that they've dealt with a lot, to the point they are sending all that information to Toyota to see if they'll do anything about it and the actual mirrors are getting hard to find because this is happening so much. Ok, fine, I have a warranty so lets get it fixed. Well they told me they couldn't find my warranty information, I have Gold level coverage, they didn't charge me for the diagnostic on the mirror, but that it would cost me $1725.00 to replace it! I had already placed a called to Toyota in Merriville, where I purchased the truck 8 months ago, and one of their finance guy's, Chris is his name, contacted me back later Tuesday afternoon. I gave him my name, he tells me "no worries", finds my warranty information, and connected me to Toyota of Merriville service department within a few seconds to schedule an appointment with them. Toyota of Merriville gets me in Wednesday morning, Jan 14th @ 07:30. They did diagnostics on the mirror, got everything worked out with my warranty, & ordered the part in no time. Today, Jan 16th, Toyota of Merriville fixed my mirror! $100 deductible, much better than the $1725.00 Gates tried to charge me. If you're able to, take your business to Toyota of Merriville! They will be getting my business from now on! Thank you Chris and Jeremy of Toyota of Merriville!

Everything from test driving to the financial part was super easy and moved fairly quickly. I would recommend them for sure. We will be back with any future purchases. Thank you ALL!!! I had reason to take my car to Gates on Ireland Rd. this week. Haven't been there in years cause I kinda lost faith in them. Got a ride home after dropping off my car. And, got a ride to pick it up. My total bill was 0. Thought my issue may have been my key. The service was incredible. Morgan even bought my car right to me because I use a cane. Morgan is a real gem. A delight to work with. So if you decide to give them a try ask for Morgan. I believe they now have a new customer. I would highly recommend Gates, and Morgan.

My wife and I traveled a couple of hours to buy a used Sienna, and we were very happy with our experience at Gates. Our sales consultant, Devin, was especially respectful, knowledgeable, and patient. I would really recommend shopping for a car here.

Drove from 3+ hours away for a Tacoma. Worked out a deal with me over the phone/ text so that I basically just had to show up and sign the paperwork. Great price on the new truck, and they gave good value for my trade.

Buying my new 4Runner at Gates Toyota was an absolute delight. Trent once again proved why I keep going back. He’s consistently knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in making sure I end up in the right vehicle rather than just any vehicle. Working with him always feels easy and trustworthy. Jason in finance kept things moving with zero friction. The paperwork was quick and clear, and he answered every question without the usual back-and-forth you brace for in a finance office. The entire process felt seamless from start to finish. The only thing that gave me pause was an interaction with the parts department. While I was standing with Trent, a couple of team members spoke to him in a way that felt unprofessional and out of place in an otherwise exceptional experience. It didn’t take away from how well Trent and Jason took care of me, but it stood out. All in all, I’m thrilled with my 4Runner and grateful for the level of service Trent and Jason consistently deliver. Gates Toyota continues to be my go-to dealership, and experiences like this are exactly why.
