we had to have a transmission rebuilt twice. The first time thy orderd a part that was defective. Thy did stop using the company that sold them the defective part. Thy still charged us the second time when it was there fault for the company thy chose to use part failed thy did not stand behind it. I am writing this about a year later after thy rebuilt it maybe a little more. The transmission from what my machanic told me thy installed it wrong that caused the fly wheel to crack. I do not recommend them and if it is the same women who has worked there for years is still there she has a attued problem.

Do yourself a huge favor and stay away! I made an appointment to diagnose my transmission. No problem, i dont mind waiting to get my truck fixed. The day came and i dropped it off. Just picked it up and the truck is worse than how i brought it in. I came in for a transmission flush and diagnosis and now i need an alternator. My battery is completely dead and when thw truck is jumped EVERY light on the dash is flashing and my tachometer doesnt work. They said when they went to start the truck it was flat dead, 4 days after my original appointment. (Truck sat for a month before going here and I hopped in and started it no problem, battery and alternator were perfectly fine) Suddenly the truck cant sit for a few days on the lot without dying. I dont understand the point of scheduling a time if your car will sit on the lot for days. This place is not worth it. I drove home feeling like I got robbed blind. Nothing I can do now but search for a decent shop.

Had my clutch installation done by this company. Service was done extremely fast and great communication between the owner and mechanic who performed my work. I am pleased with my visit to this establishment and I recommend that if you need work done do yourself a favor and see them.

If I could give them zero stars I would. Do not bring anything to this shop. I had an engine replaced here only to have it blow again a few months later, after the warranty was up. I had to get a new car and sell the one with the replaced engine for parts. The gentleman that I sold it to was a mechanic and told me that there were broken wires, plugs, nuts, and bolts all over the engine. I guess I don't have to wonder why it blew again. I am a single mom on a very tight budget and they took advantage of me. Awful people. Awful business. Definitely go somewhere else.

Truck sat for over a week in the parking lot. Owner kept telling me they would get to it the next day and call me with an diagnosis which was all I wanted. Never called, so when I called them they said they started ordering parts to fix the problem. Once again no reply or update. Called again and asked if it was fixed they said they didn’t have an update so I went in and talked to someone else and they said the truck hasn’t moved since I dropped it off because they couldn’t start it after the first day and just couldn’t figure out why and didn’t touch it after that. It had a dead battery. Do not recommend.

Took great care of my truck, very knowledgeable crew, and highly recommend to all. All work was done in a timely manor, and at a good price point, they even try to help you self diagnose any issues you have.

They came very highly recommended by someone else that had their vehicle serviced by them so I drove 45 minutes to have my front differential rebuilt. At first it came out great and I was super happy. Then a leak started so I made an appointment and dropped it off. Another 45 minute trip each way with a ride following me. 2 days later I find out they can't get to my truck that week so I picked it back up. Another month went by and finally got another appointment and dropped it off again. 3 days later and the truck which is my ONLY vehicle was still not fixed and was told that the wrong parts were delivered but the truck was never disassembled to see that it was the wrong part. As of now I have 3 seals leaking and they were supposed to call me back a week ago and no phone call. I was told that seals leak for a reason and that there must be something wrong with the truck when I specifically told them originally to go through the truck to make sure there was nothing else wrong with it. Apparently they don't stand behind their work and I will be filing a complaint with CT department of consumer protection, the attorney generals office and the BBB. I'm a retired technician of 20+ years and you should stand behind what you do and in a very timely manner.

Stacy was very friendly and accommodating. Smith Brothers diagnosed my issue and got my truck repair done in a day and a half. They were flexible with what they could do based on my budget ("Hey we can do option X vs option Y if you don't want that particular service done right now"). I did not feel pushed. As far as costs: I always wince when I see labor costs, but I felt the price I was charged was reasonable!

Great place, great knowledgeable workers. 4 different cars brought in, all came back running better than new. Timing was faster than predicted, prices were average if not better and professionalism was outstanding.

I called to price quote for transmission repair and the lady who answered becsme very rude and started yelling at me when I told her politely i know the transmission needs replacement and she got angry because she couldn't charge me a diagnostic fee. I can't believe how much this place changed over the years

Extremely rude people, specifically the lady who runs the desk and talks across the room like she wants to avoid any contact with customers period. I would never send or recommend any of my friends or family to this place, wastes of skin and time.

They took my truck and told me they could fix it. I rented a car anticipating it would be done in three days. They called me up and tell me they can’t fix it. The frame is rotted and has some issues. We can’t get it on the lift, but said we can get it on this other and then proceeded to crack my frame even more so I’m out $300 for a car rental and my truck still not fixed. They called me a price of $2800 to rebuild the whole transmission. I spoke to transmission shops and they said they wouldn’t even look at it for that price, it cost anywhere from $3500-$4000 to rebuild the transmission they were trying to screw you. He said Brothers are rude and trying to rip people off. He said they were probably just gonna rebuild the reverse in your transmission for $2800 that’s real low. So needless to say, Smith brothers are a bunch of crooks and they’re not nice people to deal with I give him one star because I can’t give him a zero zero

AVOID AT ALL COST. Quoted $900 to swap a trans then told it will be a little more because they had to swap some things over then all of a sudden the bill is $2000 because they had to replace 3 u joints (without getting any authorization). We paid in good faith and on the way home noticed a driveshaft vibration so I immediately let them know. Another shop confirmed driveshaft vibration and now they're saying there's no warranty and there will be a fee to fix it. Horrible business practices.

STAY AWAY FROM SMITH BROTHERS TRANSMISSION. This place is not a repair shop. It’s a black hole where your car, your cash, and your patience go to die. In June, I brought my car in for transmission issues. After inspecting it, they told me I needed a full transmission rebuild. Fine—I agreed to the work, but they never gave me a quote. Then came the first red flag: a day or two later, they casually informed me that they had broken my CV axle while removing the transmission. No apology, no accountability—just “Oops, that’ll be extra.” Even then, I told them I still wanted the transmission rebuilt, but I needed a proper quote. Of course, the only person who could give me that quote—Stacy, their elusive secretary—was conveniently “out” every time I called. It took her a day and a half to finally get back to me with a number: over $5,000. That was laughable, considering they were the ones who broke the axle in the first place. I told her to forget the axle—I’d handle that myself—just rebuild the transmission like we initially agreed. She said they would. The paperwork even stated that a rebuild was part of the service. So on Friday, June 13th, I went to pick up the car—because they told me it would be ready. Like an idiot, I paid them $3,000 upfront, trusting their word. And guess what? The car wasn’t ready. They pushed the pickup to Monday. When I came back that Monday with my girlfriend and a tow truck, what I saw was unreal. The trunk was full of random car parts—boxes of what used to be my transmission. It was blatantly obvious they hadn’t rebuilt anything. My girlfriend asked what the hell was going on, and Stacy had the audacity to claim that “everything was done,” and we just needed to “put the transmission back in.” Even went as far to type up a new breakdown of work that was done-which was completely different than the original copy I was given when I paid them on the 13th. I got a second opinion, which confirmed what I already suspected: this was not a rebuilt transmission—it was a pile of parts. Disassembled. Useless. They literally charged me $3,000 to dismantle my car and hand it back to me in worse shape than I left it. This isn’t just bad service. It’s dishonest, predatory, and borderline fraudulent. I will never go back to this pathetic excuse for a repair shop, and I’m currently preparing to take them to small claims court to recover the money they stole from me under false pretenses. If you care at all about your vehicle or your bank account, stay far, far away from Smith Brothers Transmission. They don’t fix cars—they destroy them.

I went to Smith Brothers to get my transmission rebuilt or replaced with a used transmission if they weren’t able to rebuild it. The workers there said they could rebuild it and it would be done in 3 to 5 days. It took them two weeks, almost 3, and then when I got the car back, it only lasted two weeks before it broke again the transmission cap fell off and it was replaced. Within 20 hours of having that car transmission cap broke again and they’re saying that I need a new case in order to fix the entire car. It is under warranty right now and within a month they’ve already worked on on it three times and they want me to pay for the damages to the transmission, (buying a new case) even though they’re the ones who can’t fix it and it wasnt broken when i brought it in. The two ladies at the front, Stacy and another lady cursed my grandfather, my father and myself on the phone. Saying they can’t fix it now, this place is a joke and there’s already a case filed upon them due to lack of work, time, and false promises under warranty.

In the past I've been extremely satisfied with their work. However, I just brought it in for transmission issues it won't go over 40 miles an hour. The transmission that is in there has a 2-year warranty on it because I just had it replaced at the same shop almost 2 years ago the warranty expires August 1st. I thought they were going to call me and tell me that they needed to replace my transmission but instead they called me and told me that they needed to replace some gaskets and it was going to cost $726 but when I picked it up the next day it was doing the same exact thing it was doing before I won't go over 40 miles an hour. I have one more year of payments otherwise I wouldn't even bother

Facts be told. Never in my 54 years of driving have I had a reason to have a transmission rebuilt in any of my well over 50 vehicles, or even replaced for that matter. Most all my cars, if an engine or transmission s##t the bed, met the junkyard. Hell I don't think I ever bought a new tire until my first child was born. And if not the junkyard; I either totaled it in one accident or another or, after my formative years - 16-40 did a couple of them get traded-in for a new car. You might say quite a few of my cars; trucks, vans, and motorcycles, I drove into the ground. However; when my 2014 Speck aka Chevrolet Spark stopped moving forward or backwards; I had it towed to Smith's Brothers Transmissions. And I'm glad I did. All the folks at Smith's made me feel comfortable right off the bat. Having your transmission rebuilt is a big💲expense. And feeling comfortable is a huge plus. Well to make my long story longer. A day or two after I dropped it off I got a call from Stacy informing me that the Speck's Transmission was completely obliterated. And when I saw it; let's say, YEP. She told me they'd look for a good used one for me. And what I mean by a good is the lowest mileage and or the bestest price. And I got both. Picked-up, Installed; with a new clutch, all for a very fair price. I'd recommend Smiths Brothers Transmission to my best friend and every who asks me. I'll tell them, They comfortably did me right. Or something like that. Thanks Gang. ✌️🇺🇲

6 years ago I had dropped my car off to get work done and was told it would be fixed in the same day. It didn’t happen and my job wasn’t convenient for multi day scheduling as I commute to different locations everyday. So they told me it would be ready “sometime” the next day. I left a yelp review about it. Since then, I moved out of the city of Norwich to New London for 2 years, then to upstate NY for 2 years, AND have since moved to Colorado for over the last 2 years. They just responded to that review with “feel free to reach out to us to see what we can do to resolve this”. OVER SIX YEARS LATER!!!! There is no resolution. Don’t go here. If there’s an issue, this is what you can expect for how they view time in everything they do.

Great Service they know what they are doing. I see some of the other reviews and don't understand some people. I had an issue that came up few weeks after having my vehicle in for servive due to faulty sensor and they took care of the issue. Stacey was easy to work with. I do see a lot of hot heads who get their panties in a bunch if one thing goes wrong after having their vehicles in for service. It's a complicated machine and they due have issues the older they get. It's great that small town shop has the right tools and equipment to diagnose issues. This shop has the technology and know how.
