Was told to bring my car in and leave it for the weekend. When I got there I had to wait 45 mins while the mechanic was on the phone asking someone else about my car. Then they gave it back after almost a hour just to tell me they need to do more research on my car?? So I did everything I was told to do on time and had a ride waiting to take me to a rent a car just to tell them they are giving me back my car just to research and I'm sorry to cancel the pickup service. So 5 almost a week later I get a call back saying bring your car in again so we can look at it. What????????? You guys already cost me money and time when you could have researched my car before you told me to drop it off. On time! Then the lady on the phone halfway apologizing and being rude saying " good luck taking it somewhere else". And she ended up being rude to me saying that " this has never happened in 25 years". But u want me to bring my car back to you and leave it again??????? I don't mind spending money for quality customer service but when u don't even know about my car but u still tell me to bring it too you just to give it back to me and call me a week later rude over the phone like I did something wrong. I should make them pay for my reservation for the rent a car I didn't need. Wow! I tried to give them business but the customer service was shot when the daughter of the owner called me being rude about me bringing my car back! Guess I will have to take it to the dealership now. But I will say that the owners wife was pleasant talking to my son and keeping us company while i had to wait a hour with my 4 yr old son on his birthday while the mechanic was on the phone getting information when I got there and no time before and I called 4 days ahead of dropping my car off at the shop. And to the owner " Please research your cars before you tell a customer to bring it in over the 3 day weekend" Customer service is a must. And to top it off I lost money so the only one out is me for a rental car I didn't need! Thanks Devoss Auto for your customer service it's 25 years of it....It's a difference telling somebody to bring a car by to be looked at versus dropping it off for the weekend. Come on. Do better next time

I’ve never owned a car before, and know almost nothing about them. Jerry was super helpful and explained everything to me so that I could understand. Fair pricing, plus a discount for VCU students. Will definitely be going back for any of my future car needs. :)

My check engine light was on so I went to them to get it checked out. They couldn’t see anything wrong with my car (when there WAS something wrong) and then proceeded to charge me $97 dollars for investigating it and doing absolutely nothing to fix it. The next day my battery died and the check engine light came back because they never actually fixed the problem only just manually got rid of the light. When I called them about it, the owner was extremely rude and defensive about it!!! I ended up taking my car to a different auto shop for a battery replacement and they immediately figured out the check engine light issue and fixed the simple root cause of it for me WITH NO CHARGE. I do not recommend this place at all especially because they’re rude when you’re unhappy with their service.

Went in to get a last-minute state inspection. There was some miscommunication about the drop off time, but they were professional, courteous, and still managed to take care of my car today. Jerry Devoss doesn't mind taking the time to explain what's going on and is able to give some options depending on the situation. I trust their work and never feel like I'm being talked down to or taken advantage of. This is really nice family owned business.

So far, I have been there for routine things (thankfully, for now), but I like going to them because they are a ma/pa place, quick, and honest. After a completed oil change Jerry did make a recommendation for the next visit and I appreciated that because I could plan for it (car was driving funky and it made sense). Prices are fair and I would def. recommend. Have been lived in Richmond less then 2yrs and it has been nice finding reliable mechanic between work and home to service my car. Thanks Jerry and Janet! Update: Had an inspection in Jan 2018. Had a broken taillight, helped me find a new one for as cheap as you can get it ( a friend looked up a used one and it wasn't that much cheaper). At the end of the inspection, he told me that my front breaks were looking worn and that I need new breaks by June if I did city driving (a tad bit longer if not). I don't mess around with breaks and I do a lot of city driving, so looks like June for new breaks. Again, can't stress how nice it is to find a honest mechanic who looks out for you for stuff you may need but won't up sell on stuff you don't need or pretend to fix stuff.

I took my daughter's car to DeVoss Auto to have the brake pads replaced. She had her oil changed at a local Jiffy Lube last month and was told that all four of her brake pads needed replaced and that it was urgent they be replaced soon. I went into this family-owned garage this morning fully expecting to pay for a complete brake pad replacement imagine my surprise when Mr. DeVoss told me that my daughter's brakes were fine. He said her brakes would pass a state inspection and they should be good for at least another year.! Talk about honest! So thrilled to have found this garage in Richmond, Virginia. It gives me such peace of mind knowing that she can take her car to have it serviced and not be cheated.! What a treasure to find in today's day and age.

I called them in the morning for a last minute inspection and they were able to take me in at 12 p.m. Came in at 12:02 and was out by 12:25. They did my inspection and fixed every issue at had in that time span( needs a brake light, windshield wipers, and a bulb ). Great customer service and the workers were very friendly. A little pricier than what I’m used to but I’m a little on the cheap side. Highly recommend !

I recently visited this auto mechanic with concerns about a strange noise coming from my car's rear wheel, suspecting a brake issue. To my relief, they confirmed the brakes were in good condition and were unable to replicate the noise. While I still occasionally hear it, their inability to find anything amiss reassures me. Being new to the area, I've been on the lookout for a trustworthy mechanic. It's refreshing to encounter a service that didn't exploit my concerns by fabricating problems. Additionally, they conducted the Virginia inspection, requiring only a signal light and windshield wiper replacement. They also detected a minor leak in the thermostat housing, offering a very reasonable repair quote. Impressively, they took the time to show me the problem directly in the shop, which I greatly appreciated. Both the technicians and the front desk staff were friendly and professional. I have exclusively gone to DeVoss since moving to Richmond. It’s been amazing have a family shop nearby that does great work at a great price, plain and simple. One of my biggest tells for an auto repair shop is being able to have a real conversation about anything that needs to be done now versus later or things to watch for later, rather than being pushed to perform everything upfront. I can’t even imagine going to another shop!

I won't be taking our car back. Nothing is ever their fault even when they tell you stuff that is absolutely not true. They have helped with a couple real problems over the years, but trying to get simple maintenance issues taken care of is a problem. I asked for a strut job and they told me it would be expensive. I said ok. Got the car back and they told me that the knocking sound in the rear was not struts but sway bars. I didn't realize until 2 week later that then only did the front struts when I put on the sway bars and the noise continued. I had to get a friend to help me put my own rear struts in. Saved about $1000 and found out that in fact it was the rear struts that were causing the noise. I called to discuss and of course, it was my fault. When i asked for a strut job i didn't say all struts so they only did the front 2 and lied about the back. They don't remember conversations or the lies they put on the tickets either. It really sucks because i thought i had found a good mechanic. When calling today i was told that a normal strut job was just the front. You will notice that many reviews talk about how rude they are and this is definitely true.

I met Dave randomly and could tell that he was so knowledgeable on auto repairs. He said he worked at DeVoss, I called the next day to set up an appointment. I needed my cars air conditioning repair. They were able to squeeze me in the next day. Professional, knowledgeable, fair pricing. I couldn’t recommended them higher. Absolute professionals and they will be used for my commercial fleet. At the start of our winter storm on 12/8/25 I was leaving the gym to find my car battery had died. Walked into DeVoss to see if they could help me out as they were closing up shop due to the weather. Dave walked with me a block away in the snow to jump my car and Nick had me pull around back to switch out the battery before he left for the day. Absolutely amazing dudes. Could have easily dismissed me and got out of there for the day. Definitely will be using these guys for any future maintenance.
