I bought a 2006 Subaru from S&S for an extraordinarily high price. But the car was rare and Steve said he'd done a lot of service on it. It all seemed good, but the devil is in the details. Within 100 miles the "check engine" light came on. The car smelled of burning oil after the motor was shut off. The car was rough but had potential. Within 1000 miles after the purchase, the turbocharger grenaded. The drivers seat switch was broken off so the seat couldn't be adjusted. All service records were gone and the car was simply dirty. But it had potential. Steve said he'd rebuilt the turbo but the mechanic at Subaru where I had the turbo replaced said it had never been removed. I don't know how it can be rebuilt without removing it. But I'm not a mechanic. But the Subaru shop is and they are the folks who said it had never been removed. My point here is that i expected much more than what i got for spending a lot of money on a car with 200,000 miles on it. And the only thing i had to rely on was the word of S&S. I believe they did work on it, that they replaced simple parts, but the level of service was not as advertised. I have now spent almost $2000 above the purchase price to make the car right. Literally, it has been in the shop longer than I've been able to drive it. I would not recommend buying a used car from this shop. I am always looking for the positive in people, and I'm sure Steve is a nice guy, but not quite as forthcoming as he makes out to be.

I have been in Iowa City since 1985. My wife grew up here. It took us a while to find a reliable and trust worthy mechanic but quite a few years ago we tried S & S and have gone here ever since. Steve is a straight shooter and a fantastic mechanic. He will give you an honest assessment of your car without thought of profit. It is rare to find such a person, let alone mechanic these days. If you are looking for a mechanic you can absolutely trust at a fair price look no further. I would give my very highest recommendation to Steve and S & S Auto.

Took my Subaru Crosstrek there 6 mos ago for its 1st oil change. He told me "nice new vehicle" and then charged me $160 for the oil change, filter, and tire rotation. Never again.

I’ve taken my Pathfinder to S & S for a couple of years now and they do a great job. They are easy to work with and schedule and do quality work. He’s done oil changes, maintenance, rotations and replaced tires. Steve lets me know what work will be needed in the future but isn’t pushy and doesn’t feel like a salesman. S & S is a trustworthy place to take your cars.
